About the GID — The GID was founded through Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) 318 in 1964. Currently, the District serves 470 private residential customers and 50 commercial customers in Zephyr Cove. There are over 7 miles of water and sewer infrastructure and over 8 miles of roads and curbs to maintain. The District is guided by 5 elected officials who oversee 5 full-time employees that are responsible for water treatment and delivery, road maintenance, and wastewater and storm water collection.
Zephyr Cove, Nevada, is located on the south eastern shore of Lake Tahoe. Elevation ranges from 6229 to 6750 feet covering approximately three square miles. The community is primarily residential surrounded by public lands on three sides with the commercial core located at the intersection with US Highway 50 and Elk Point Rd. The GID is located totally within the Burke Creek Watershed of the Tahoe Basin.
Lake Tahoe is a year-round destination resort with world-class skiing, gambling, dining and boating. The lake is 12 miles across and 22 miles long with approximately 72 miles of shore line. Its average depth is about 1000 feet, making it the 10th deepest alpine lake in the world. Its famed blue color is under threat from rapid development from the 50’s and 60’s. Many agencies and organizations collaborate to help mitigate this degradation.
